If you have never gone “owling,” this is a great chance to see what is involved. Sandra is an experienced owler, having done Spotted Owl surveys for many years for her private consulting company. Help scout potential locations through the Arcata Bottom looking for Barn Owl and Short-eared Owl, then visit various locations using tapes or voice calling to elicit responses from nighttime forest owls, including Barred Owls as they become more common in the area. Requires good luck, a flashlight, and warm clothes. SEEING (as opposed to hearing) an owl is never guaranteed, but seeing a Short-eared or Barn Owl is quite possible. Expect variable terrain and possibly wet ground. May be able to use a spotting scope until dark. Restrooms not available once the trip leaves the Community Center. Rain cancels this trip.
