We’ve all be amazed and motivated by the beauty of birds. However, the beauty of birds is not about us. Birds are beautiful because they are beautiful to themselves. This interdisciplinary talk and discussion will connect evolutionary biology, aesthetic philosophy, and art history to explore the implications of avian beauty for the definition of art and aesthetics. Using examples from ornithology and human art history, Prum will argue that bird songs, courtship displays, and many avian plumages are biotic artforms. Looking at art and the natural world in this way expands not only our appreciation of the aesthetic richness of birds, but enhances our appreciation of the unique many features of the human arts.
