Humboldt County provides a temperate climate in which butterfly species can be enjoyed nearly year-round. The geographical variation of the county provides many habitats for these insects including our local dunes. Some of the butterfly species that can be seen on the dunes in April include Acmon Blue, Echo Azure, Western Pine Elfin, Brown Elfin, and Painted Lady. The dunes provide habitat for the plants upon which the larvae of many of these species depend. We’ll discuss butterfly biology and ecology while we search for adult butterflies. A pair of close-focusing binoculars are useful for identification and also you will better enjoy the delicate patterns and vibrant colors of these insects. Bring a reusable water bottle and wear close-toed sturdy shoes. Restrooms are available at the Coastal Nature Center in Manila.
