Drive along the designated National Forest Scenic Highway as we head to inland Humboldt County, Willow Creek, and the Trinity River. Nesting birds of the warmer interior portions of the county (Western Kingbird, Acorn Woodpecker, Western Tanager) will be our focus. Sought-for species include Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Spotted Sandpiper, and American Dipper near the spectacular Trinity River. Expect variable terrain, including short, steep pitches on developed trails. Weather may be warmer than on the coast, but there is always the possibility of rain. Bring lunch, snacks, and water. Restrooms are available 1 hour into the trip and on the return. Some opportunity to use a spotting scope, if you have one. One-way travel is about 1 hour.
