The Western Snowy Plover is a threatened shorebird breeding on Humboldt County beaches.  For the past several years, the population has been monitored by Humboldt State University (HSU) researchers while local consultants and land managers continue with recovery efforts. Dr. Mark Colwell has been studying shorebird ecology for 35 years and is an ornithology professor at HSU. Mark has been involved with Snowy Plover surveys and recovery efforts since the species was listed as Federally Threatened in 2000. This trip will begin in a short classroom session. Bring a spotting scope if you have one and be prepared to walk up to 1 mile over soft sand. Bring a reusable water bottle and a lunch if you wish.
