California Thrashers are a species that barely makes it into Humboldt County, being found only in a few select locations near Shelter Cove. Maybe you’ve seen California Thrasher before but we doubt that you have seen THESE California Thrashers while looking towards the Pacific Ocean from over 1,000 feet above sea level with the town of Shelter Cove to the south. Walk an easy hike down a BLM trail to the Thrashers and then drive to Shelter Cove to look at the coastal waters there and enjoy the birds the town has to offer, which includes some of the only Purple Martins nesting in gourds on the West Coast. All wheel drive vehicles are recommended for the road up to the Cal Thrasher location. Expect variable terrain, restrooms are available along the way, bring a spotting scope if you have one, and a reusable water bottle.

This event includes a sack lunch, please email us at godwitdaysreg@yahoo.com if you have any dietary restrictions.
