When you’re a Humboldt birder and you want to look for spring songbird migrants, often the first place one thinks of is the Blue Lake cottonwoods and/or the Mad River Fish Hatchery. Both can be excellent for migrant songbirds that use the extensive riparian habitat at both locations for fueling up on their migration and for summer residency to raise the next generation of their species. By this time of year, Warbling Vireos and Orange-crowned, Yellow-rumped, and Wilson’s Warblers will be in full song and Black-throated Gray Warblers probably will have just arrived and started setting up territories. This is a great trip to practice and get familiar with bird songs. You never know what interesting species might turn up at either of these locations during a Godwit Days trip! Easy walking on flat trails; restrooms available at the hatchery.

MEETING LOCATION: Arcata Community Center, Outside front doors
