“Stories from the Nest: Sequoia Park Zoo’s Conservation Partnerships”

Speakers: Jim Campbell-Spickler, Sequoia Park Zoo Director; Ruth Mock, Director of Conservation and Research at Sequoia Park Zoo, David Juliano, Sequoia Park Zoo Conservation Advisory Committee member and Agriculture Inspector for the Humboldt County Dept. of Agriculture; and Christine Damiani, Director of the Butterfly Conservation Program at Sequoia Park Zoo.

Join the Sequoia Park Zoo’s Conservation Advisory Committee for stories from the nest! Ever wonder what it’s like to be an eaglet in the nest? Climbing biologists like our Zoo Director are experts at using ropes to access tree crowns and cliff sides that most humans have never seen or imagined. You’ll see videos showing interactions with young birds in their nest and learn why accessing these sites is important to bird conservation. At ground level, hear about how the committee has been monitoring the response of wild bird populations to the Zoo’s habitat restoration project that brought native plants back to our Zoo’s landscaping through the Native Plant Initiative. The Director of our Butterfly Conservation Program will share about captive-rearing threatened and endangered butterfly species for release to boost wild populations. The Zoo’s other conservation programs and partnerships will be discussed including our Quarters for Conservation program, Conservation Grant program, Conservation Lecture Series, and participation in the Northern California Condor Restoration Program.

Before the main lecture, attendees will hear an address by the City of Arcata Mayor.
