SU57 Del Norte Tufted Puffins (includes a bag lunch) – GOLD – CLASSIC | 2023 | $80 – SOLD OUT
Time - 6:45 am - 4:00 pm
Trip Leader(s): Lucas Brug & Bob Brown
A classic Godwit Days trip that has never missed its target: the enigmatic and showy Tufted Puffin! After driving to Del Norte County, the group will rendezvous off Anchor Way in the Crescent City Harbor. After spending a few moments starting our species day list by looking at harbor birds, we will make our way toward Castle Rock National Wildlife Refuge to search for Tufted Puffins at the only remaining location in California where they can be seen from land. Castle Rock not only hosts puffins, but is also an extremely important location for breeding seabirds, with 11 species known to nest there, including both Leach’s and Fork-tailed Storm-Petrels (which only come into their nests at night; not possible to see on this trip). Tens of thousands of Common Murres are the most obvious nesting bird that we will view. After finding puffins (a scope is absolutely necessary; Lucas will have his but if you have one, bring it), the rest of the day is gravy, as we spend it birding some of the other popular locations in coastal Del Norte County: Alexandre Dairy, Lake Earl and/or Tolowa, Smith River Bottoms, etc. Any walking will be on flat terrain. This smaller group event includes a bag lunch, please let us know if you have dietary restrictions by sending an e-mail to godwitdaysreg@yahoo.com with details.
