Discover the endangered and mysterious Marbled Murrelet, set in dramatic old-growth redwood forest with a local biologist. This trip to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park near Orick is for early birds! The first detection of a “MAMU” will probably be the loud “keer” call, the most common call you hear during these dawn flights. The dawn chorus – including Varied Thrush, Pacific Wren, possibly Pileated Woodpecker, and often Northern Pygmy and Barred Owls – accompanies pre-dawn flights of the murrelets. It’s quite the experience seeing small seabirds that live most of their life on the ocean in flight among the ancient redwoods. Flat terrain, but can be damp so prepare for such conditions. Roosevelt Elk sightings are highly likely along the route. Restrooms are available at Prairie Creek Visitor Center. 90 miles round-trip travel.

Bird species seen at this location in April, view here.
