Meet outside the front doors of the community center.
Discover this endangered and mysterious Marbled Murrelet, set in dramatic redwood old-growth forest. The ringing “keer” calls pierce the early morning mist. This trip to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park near Orick is for early birds! The dawn chorus, including Varied Thrush, Pacific Wren and possibly Pileated Woodpecker, accompanies pre-dawn flights of the murrelets. These birds are usually seen only in flight. Plenty of other redwood forest birds can be enjoyed. Flat terrain, but moist. Restrooms are available at Prairie Creek visitor center, will not stop for food (or coffee). (Carpool, 90 miles round trip).
The Community Center will not open at this early hour so please be sure any restroom needs are taken care of and you already have coffee or tea or whatever else you may need before meeting the group at 5 a.m. Marbled Murrelets only fly around during dawn and activity can die down after sunrise, especially if it is a clear day.
